Using Style as a Form of Self Care
I’ve had people tell me that style seems like the opposite of self-care to them…. in their eyes it involves judgment, rules, stress, comparison, and disappointment. Their thoughts are completely valid since the fashion industry is fueled by tapping into our insecurities and fear of missing out, but I challenge them to look at Style in a different way.
Self care is a term that’s been thrown around a ton these days especially during the holidays when everyone's running around buying gifts, planning parties, and fighting colds. Podcasts, instagram, and emails from Nordstrom tell us to slow down and treat ourselves.
LOOK GOOD… FEEL GOOD
I’ve come to realize that this is major connection, as one will feed the other and it doesn’t really matter where you begin. Personally, I find it easier to feel good if I look good first. When you take the time to decide how you are going to show up you are broadcasting to yourself and to everyone around you that you deserve to put yourself first and that you are a force to be reckoned with. It also helps to remind ourselves that we have control over our image and how we are perceived.
SHIFT THE FOCUS
Focus on what you love about your self and draw attention to that! When we think about dressing for our body we think about the things that we don’t like and how do we hide or distract from that specific part…instead let’s make it positive! Remember that like enhances like. Wear items of clothing that mimic your features in order to draw attention to them.
Link the color of your eyes to your clothing of accessories to draw attention to them
Highlight a favorite part of you body by cinching it or using an embellishment
Wear a ruffle detail to enhance the texture of your hair!
BE TRUE TO YOU
Personal style is exactly that… personal! Break the rules…. make fun of my emails and style tips! Dress in a way that makes you feel confident and fabulous! But do take the time to find your own style and wear pieces that you love!
What are you wearing this holiday season?
The holidays are like the prom for adults… An excuse to dress up, wear something you wouldn’t wear in March, and let your unique personality shine! My goal as a stylist is to make it easy for busy moms to feel confident and look polished every day! I love finding pieces that are not only fabulous, they also flattering to a client’s body type

My goal as a stylist is to make it easy for busy moms to feel confident and look polished every day! I love finding pieces that are not only fabulous, they also flattering to a client’s body type.
This season I am loving all of the fun sequin jumpsuits! If you’ve worn jumpsuits before you would know it’s hard to find one that is really flattering since there is a lot going on there. I suggest looking for one that has a v-neckline. A V-neck draws the attention up towards your face and away from your mid-section… an area most moms I know are trying to distract from. V-necks also guide the eye in a vertical direction giving the illusion of being taller and slimmer. Steer clear from a jumpsuit with pockets. Pockets draw attention to your hips and make them look larger than they actually are. Here’s a link to few of my favorites….
Moms on the run like you try to jam pack as many things into a day as possible in order to create that balance of being #1 mom and having some sort of life of your own. This eliminates some of luxuries we had pre-child like going home and getting ready for drinks with the girls or a holiday party. The easiest way to make the transition from work-mode to party mode is to put on a pair of fun heels and add a little sparkle. When wearing a statement shoe, be sure to wear an accessory to draw the attention back to your face. The goal is for someone to notice your killer shoes and then go back to your face to listen to your words of wisdom. This can be accomplished with an earring, necklace, scarf, or coordinating lipstick (i.e. red shoe with a red lip) Here are a few of fab shoe and accessory combos…
A chic jacket is a New Yorker’s version of a sports car…. And the holidays are the perfect excuse to experiment with a statement jacket. It’s no fun to show up at a holiday party covering your fancy frock with the ¾ length puffer jacket you wear on the soccer field. The good news is you’ll have the jacket after the holidays to wear to weddings, girl’s nights, and date nights instead of that same puffer! When looking for coat… don’t go for the black… it’s draining and makes you look even paler than you feel. So for something with a little more of a pop… check out these

Does this season's jeans & boots have you confused?
Jeans and boots are a classic go to uniform for the winter… Today’s version of the look has gotten super chic and a little challenging to decode. Jeans are cropped, flared, embellished, or straight and boots are short, chunky, funky, or flat this season.

Wear your jeans over your boots
I’ve been suggesting that straight leg jeans are more flattering than skinny jeans, but the questions always comes up…. what does do I wear with them? I suggest styling their jeans over your boots, with hemlines ranging from grazing just over the top of the boot to hanging down several inches. My favorite way to wear them is a little cropped giving attention to your awesome boots! Here are a few of my favorite boots to wear inside your jeans.
Tuck Your Jeans In Your Boots
This one is the trickiest of all in my opinion.
Do tuck your denim when it is very skinny at the ankle and will not bunch. It also has to be long enough to tuck.
Do tuck your denim when your boots have a wider opening at the top.
Don’t try to tuck your denim when your boots are very short (i.e. hit at your ankle), only when they are a bit taller.
Here are a few fab boots to tuck your jeans into.
Cropped Denim
This is perhaps the easiest way because your jeans do all the work for you. If you are wearing a cropped pair of jeans, they are already not going to conflict with your booties.
Do let your denim hit above your booties
Don’t let there be too much skin between the bottom of your jeans and the top of your booties. This may mean (depending on how cropped your jeans are) that you need a taller ankle bootie (one that hits above your ankle bone) or you can go for a more relaxed look with a little fold.
Here are some great booties to pair with a cropped jean.

How many times have you gotten dressed, looked in the mirror and thought “Something looks ‘off’ here”?
When you put together an outfit and it doesn’t look quite right it is most likely that proportions of what your are wearing is off.
o you have a top and bottom that you love and you think – now this will make a perfect outfit. However, when you put it on there is just something not right about it. The styles, colors, patterns look good but there is just something off. Sometimes I would play with the outfit and think – maybe if the top was shorter or the skirt was longer. I never could quite figure out the problem until I learned about the impact of proportion on my outfit and the Rule of Thirds.
First, a little background – the Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio, represented by the Greek letter phi, and is used in mathematics, architecture and art…and also fashion. The ancient Greeks claimed that a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio is the most aesthetically pleasing division of spaces. In fashion, this is often referred to as “the Rule of Thirds.”
An example of the Golden Ratio in architecture is the Eiffel Tower – see how it breaks visually into 2/3 on the top and 1/3 on the bottom?
Applying the Rule of Thirds to Your Outfits
Proportion is the framework with which we build our outfits, consciously or not. And the relative proportion of color or design elements can make or break a look.
Think about building separates like the Eiffel Tower is built. As you put your items together divide your overall look into thirds rather than half or quarters. A balanced one-to-one ratio can be dull or boring. Unbalanced proportions are much more interesting and pleasing to look at.

Is your closet jammed packed with clothes, but you have nothing to wear?
Most people only wear 1/3 of what's hanging in their closet. They are still holding onto pieces from another life making them unable to see items they love.
Most people only wear 1/3 of what's hanging in their closet. They are still holding onto pieces from another life making them unable to see items they love. Go through your closet asking yourself when's the last time I wore this and did I feel great when I did. If there is something you are not certain about, hang it front and center in your closet reminding yourself to put it on. If you don't wear it in two months it's time to donate or sell.
Do you have clothing hanging in your closet with tags still on them?
Stop buying something because it's a good deal or on sale. Don't get me wrong, I love a deal, sale, coupon code, and would twerk for a birkin. But, It's not a good deal if it's been hanging there for a year and never been worn. Before buying something with any sort of promotion... ask yourself "Would I buy this if it was full price?" if the answer is no... PUT IT BACK!
Are you missing the basics?
Do you have lots of statement pieces that you love, but are bored with? You can be missing key items. These staple items are the glue that helps put all your outfits together. Click here to find a list of my favorite staples.
Are you thinking "When am I gonna do this?"
Does all of this info sound great... but you are thinking when am I going to do all of this and where do I start? I don't have the time to get rid of the clothes that i don't wear, create new looks from the clothes I already own, and shop for key items that will elevate my wardrobe! For the price of a designer jeans I can help you revamp your wardrobe and save you tons because you are only buying clothing you love wearing....email me at melanie@melanielippman.com to schedule a time to chat to review the details.
Transitional Pieces
A few key pieces will make this time of influx chic and seamless. I find that it is best to layer up since it’s typically chilly in the morning, warm at lunch time, and back to chilly in the evening, You want to have a great game plan so you won’t be caught off guard! Always remember you may need to shed a layer at anytime and want to love your base layer since you maybe wearing it all day.
Can you believe this is the first week of Spring? On the northeast it seems like it is still the middle of Winter with about a foot of snow on the ground. Shortly the snow will melt, the temps will rise, and our winter coats will go away for awhile…. Which means it is time for some great transitional outfit ideas.

Blazer with a hoodie under = effortless chic
Layering a hoodie and blazer is always a good idea... it's two classic pieces that you probably have hanging in your closet. Clients usually have a suit they no longer wear from an old corporate job or from when they were interviewing. Depending on when the suit is from the blazer may need a few little tweaks from a tailor to make it look current.... throw a hoodie under it and it will look like you just bought it!
Pair a cozy sweater with a Spring skirt
I love mixing my metaphors.. wearing camo pants with a ruffle top, a ripped up shirt with impeccably tailored pants, or a blazer with distressed jeans. Another variation I love is a summer inspired skirt ( a floral or denim skirt) with a cozy sweater. This look also helps you bridge the gap between seasons while getting a few extra wearings out of your sweaters and allowing you wear skirts a little earlier than you might have.
HELLO Moto
A leather moto jacket is one of those go to pieces I couldn’t live without. It can elevate a jeans & tee or dress down a fancy dress. It is probably one of the most suggested items I bring up to my clients.

So what do you do if you have broad shoulders? Like with any part of your body you’re not so fond of you… Accentuate somewhere you like better, create Balance, or Camouflage that area. Here are some tips for helping you fall back in love with your shoulders.
In the past weeks I've had 2 clients that were concerned about their broad shoulders and was looking for some advice how to minimize their appearance… so I figured I would share the wealth. You may be asking yourself do I have broad shoulders? If you have trouble with button downs and blazers seem a little tight across your back… that may be the case.
Here’s how to tell for sure. Take a yardstick and hold it across the base of your neck. If your shoulder hits the stick, you have broad shoulders. If your shoulder is 1-1 1/2 inches down from the yardstick, you have standard shoulders. If your shoulder is 2" are more away from the yardstick, you have sloped shoulders. If your shoulders do not extend far from the neck, you have narrow shoulders. The image below with help put all into prospective.
What can be done?
Broad shoulders draw a wide horizontal line across your body, a line that can be accentuated or minimized depending on how you dress. Because they are the frame of your neckline, your shoulders' appearance can be impacted by the cut of your top. The right clothing and accessories can create a proportional look from head to toe. So what do you do if you have broad shoulders? Like with any part of your body you’re not so fond of you… Accentuate somewhere you like better, create Balance, or Camouflage that area. Here are some tips for helping you fall back in love with your shoulders.
Breaking Up Broad Shoulders
Accessories can break up broad shoulders, this creates two shorter shoulder segments rather than one long horizontal line above your chest. This can be done by wearing a scarf or a long necklace, which breaks up the horizontal line of your shoulders. This illusion can also be created by wearing vertical embellishments around the chest, such as ruffles or lace along the V-neck of a top, this will create visual interest beyond your shoulders. Here are a few necklaces I am loving.
Creating a Vertical Silhouette
When selecting shirts look ones that draw the eye away from, rather than emphasize, your shoulders. Steer clear of skinny jeans, bootcut styles will balance out the top and bottom halves of your body. The same is true for skirts…avoid pencil skirts and look for shirts with a little flare, which balance your top. Replace crew neck T-shirts with V-neck and scoop-neck tops, which draw the eye down to the chest.
Select longer jackets and blazers, which create vertical, rather than horizontal, visual interest and elongate your torso.
Choosing the Right Colors
Dark colors help to slim your silhouette. Try a dark-colored top paired with a statement bottom. A black, navy or dark gray top creates the visual illusion of slimmer shoulders. There are so many great pleated or asymmetrical skirts for Spring… pair one of them to create contrast with the dark, shoulder-slimming top.

When it's okay to wear black
I love wearing color and usually discourage my clients from wearing black. Besides loving to spice things up a little, I do have my reasons for denying the ease of wearing black including it can be draining, it ages you, and it’s not gonna cheer you up during a low point in your day like green will!

There are a few times when I encourage black...
When you are buying something inexpensive
When I’m shopping at a fast fashion retailers like forever21, h&m, or topshop I usually opt for the black option. Inexpensive fabrics and not the best workmenship are hidden when black material is used. Here are a few of fast fashion pieces in black that I loving.
Black & Navy
I love black and navy... it is probably my favorite color combination. I find it extremely chic, always in style, and easy to wear. The blue of the navy helps to brighten up the black making it a little less morbid.
Use black to minimize
Want to hide the baby weight on .your tummy from a few years ago? Try a black top! Wish your hips were a little smaller? Wear black pants. Black minimizes so wear it on the bigger parts of your body. Bring attention and play up your favorite parts with a lighter color.
Not much is better than a black leather jacket
A black leather jacket is a wardrobe staple for me. It the perfect way to make a conservative dress a little edgy and looks amazing with jeans and a sweater. This time of year is also a great time to invest since fall/ winter items are going on sale and it will always be in style
Wearing black is all about balance
When wearing black keep in mind that it is draining! if you are wearing it near your face you may need to wear a little more makeup or a bright color accessory to balance the black.

Keep warm in style without breaking the bank
Today is December 21st... not only my husband's birthday, it i also the first day of winter. I am already shopping for my warm weather trip in February... which means I am getting sick of the cold weather. One way I always beat the winter blues to get a winter coat that I LOVE and enjoy wearing!
This season there are three jacket styles that are chic and cozy! All three were originally designed by European Fashion brands and could have you shelling out around $3,000 for each coat. Sometimes I don't feel like making such a major investment in a piece that I may not find myself loving next season! I have done the research for you... here are this seasons key coats that won't damage your wallet.
The Aviator Jacket
This shearling lined flight jacket usually metal buckles at the hem and the collar. This is the winterized version of the bomber jacket. You probably have seen this jacket by Acne Studios that retails for $2,700 on celebs.
These are the best Aviator Jackets around that don't cost an arm and a leg.
The Asymmetrical Puffer Jacket
This is not your run of the mill down jacket. The asymmetrical puffer jacket keeps you warm while making a statement. This is Balenziaga's puffer that costs $2,850.
These are some perfectly priced puffers.... now say that three times fast!
The Fur Lined Parkra
I completely went GAGA for this jacket last year when spotting a MR & MRS Italy fur parka last year in a local boutique. I looked at the $7,000 price tag, rolled my eyes, and stored the information in my brain for later internet perusing... give the girl a fashion mission and she will achieve it!
Here are a few great options whose price tags don't cause an eye roll.

Should I buy it?
Right now is spring’s version of black Friday… stores of putting their spring / summer clothing on sale and they are slashing prices. Barney’s, Bergdorf’s, and Saks are having up to 60% off, and net-a-porter is up to 70% off, It can get very overwhelming and want to make sure you are thinking clearly when you are in the fitting room or hitting that add to cart button.
Here are 5 questions to ask yourself before decide add something new to your wardrobe.
Does it enhance your current wardrobe?
Is this something that you have been looking for when you are getting dressed? Does it go with the color palette you have in your wardrobe? Will you wear it at least 5 times?
Does it fit your current lifestyle?
Is this piece for your life at this exact moment… not pre-kids, not if you lived on a tropical island, or if you suddenly became a philanthropist that attended 15 galas a year? You should only be investing in pieces that when you now… not who you may be if you had this piece hanging in your closet :)
Do you already have it?
Admit it.. you have 4 white shirts that look exactly alike, 3 dresses that you mistake for one another, and a handful of grey sweaters. We all do it… buy the same thing over and over again…because they look good on you, because they are useful, because we love them! If you already own it…. Put it back!!!!
Does it enhance your look?
Sometimes we fall in love at first sight … we can’t believe how amazing it is and that is actually in your hands… this happens very often when an item is on sale. When you try it on you are already so attached to it that you don’t take the time to consider that it may not look so great on you. You have to ask yourself do you want this pieces more than you want to look good.
Will you regret it if you leave the store without it?
My clients are the most hardworking and giving people I know… they usually put themselves last and don’t would rather buy something for someone in their family rather than themselves. Sometimes it is my job to allow them to spoil themselves just a little as a reward for all of their hard work. So ask yourself what will you be thinking about this item in a few days if you leave the store without it?

Not your grandmother's pearls
Gucci Creative Director, Alessandro Michele, used Pearls as one of the many elements to jazz up Gucci's extremely coveted opulent pieces. What I love about pearl adornment is that it has a classic look and can be worn during the day, while sequins and studs may be a little much for the office.
The great news is... the pearls have caught on and you don't have to pay Gucci prices to get a pearl-dazzled piece in your wardrobe.

Stop saving your clothes for "good".... enjoy them now!!
I always worked really hard to be able to buy really nice clothes. So when I would finally acquire the items, I didn’t want to mess it up. I would end up keeping them “for good” and never got the most possible enjoyment out of these investment items.
There were plenty of times I forgot that I had these precious items. When the occasion was finally right to put on such a piece sometimes they didn’t fit as well as they did when I purchased it or it was out of style and it didn't look current.
Moral of the story… there is no day like today to put on something special!
Here are a few tips to getting those items in your outfit rotation
Pull out 3 items you save for “good” hang them on the door or in the front of your closet and wear them within the next week.
Dress down a piece if you feel it’s a little dressy for your daily life with casual basics like a white tee, jeans, or sneakers.
It’s finally getting warmer out so pair a frilly dress with a pair of flat sandals and a denim jacket... go out and have some fun!
This is now I have been enjoying some of my "good pieces"
Stylish shoes don't have to be a sore subject
I love shoes!!!! They are probably my favorite thing to shop for myself and for clients!!! Shoes still fit if you gained you gained a few pounds and if you take good care of them they will last a very long time so I don't feel guilty splurging on them! My clients love shoes too...but recently they have been a sore subject ( did you know I was that corny?) I’ve had lots of conversations about foot pain, heel height, blisters... I could go on and on!
I know a thing or two about foot pain… I am 5 feet tall , moonlighting as someone that is 5'5. I've spent my life walking many avenues to the closest subway, standing at events for 10 hours, and walking for miles on end at trade shows . Instead of being in a constant state of pain, my vain self has learned to shop for shoes that are comfortable. I refuse sacrifice style for comfort, so it’s a good thing that there are so many great comfy stylish options this season.

I’ve also included a bunch of closed toe options for ladies who need to keep it a little buttoned up at the office.

When you learn how to identify and fill your clothing needs with the right choices it become much less important how much an item costs. You must love what you wear and wear what you love… now that’s a good deal!!
Do you know how many times I go into a client’s closet and find items that still have price tags on them? When I inquire about them, the answer is always the same… it was on sale! I love a bargain…. I grew up rummaging through bins at off-price stores looking for discounted designer items. I know more than anyone how hard it is to pass up a “good deal!” But when we total the cost of those 5 sale items that have never seen the light of day, they cost more than that cashmere cardigan you haven’t let yourself splurge on. If you had that cashmere cardigan, you probably would wear it multiple times a month.
I often speak to my clients about cost per wear. If you get a dress on sale for $150 and wear it once, that’s $150 for your one wearing. If you invest $400 on a perfectly tailored dress that makes you feel as if you can conquer the world and you wear it 20 times a season… that’s $20 a wearing; not to mention how fabulous and confident you feel when you wear it. When you wear pieces you love; you close deals, you get a promotion, you can do anything!
When you learn how to identify and fill your clothing needs with the right choices it become much less important how much an item costs. You must LOVE what you WEAR and WEAR what you LOVE… now that’s a good deal!!
I may not be so keen on shopping on the sale rack, but I still do love to help my clients invest wisely and get as much as they can with their money. For this reason, I love a department store’s friends & family event or websites seasonal discount. This is when a store takes about 25% off of most things they carry. This way you’re getting money off of prime merchandise, not waiting for something that has been looked over to be reduced. Here are some great investments from Bloomindales friends & family that is taking place now until April 9Th… they are taking 25% off regularly priced merchandise.

Frump to Fabulous in 3 Seconds
With a collarless blazer, you instantly go from frump to pretty fab. I love that these blazers are polished and a little edgy. They are a must have item in my client’s wardrobe. They are perfect over a dress, great with a skirt, and an easy way to dress up jeans and a tee.
Ever look in the mirror in the morning and not feel completely happy with your clothing choice? You don’t have the time or patience to change your whole outfit, but you do feel a little frumpy. Whenever I am in these situations (yes, even I have fashion blunders) I put on a collarless blazer. I instantly go from frump to pretty fab. I love that these blazers are polished and a little edgy. They are a must have item in my client’s wardrobe. They are perfect over a dress, great with a skirt, and an easy way to dress up jeans and a tee.
I also love the collarless blazers that a little stretch (more like a cardigan). They aren’t as constricting as a blazer sometimes can be, especially if you’re at a desk all day.
I have many clients that prefer this style over a traditional blazer. Blazers can be challenging if you have a larger chest; if it doesn't fit perfectly, the lapels can bend and gape in unflattering ways. The smooth lines of a collarless blazer allow the front of the jacket to glide over your chest without that awkward bulge.

Spring trends that will become classics
Have you ever bought an item, thought you loved it, and wore it for one season for it to never be worn again? Now when you look at it hanging in your closet you think “why did I buy that and when did I ever wear that?” You probably bought a piece that was the IT trend last year and feel like you will be wearing “last year’s old news” if you were to wear it now. Where did you go wrong? You’re not a fashion victim… It happens to the best of us… who can resist those bell sleeves that can be found everywhere from Target to Bergdorf’s? I’m not telling you to avoid trends all together, I myself cannot resist a good trend. I tell my clients if you are going to make an investment in a trend item, try to picture yourself wearing it in two years. There are a number of Spring 2017 trends what will stand the test of time….
